Ferrari: Maranello team may face troublesome issue amid Lewis Hamilton’s first on-track appearance. Ferrari worried about fan turnout at Fiorano ahead of Lewis Hamilton’s first test.

Lewis Hamilton, 2024 F1

The long-awaited moment that Ferrari fans have been eagerly anticipating is finally approaching.

Lewis Hamilton will soon make his way to Ferrari’s headquarters in Maranello to begin preparations for the 2025 Formula 1 season, and excitement is building about how the sport’s most successful driver will fare at the sport’s most iconic team. After securing six world championships with Mercedes, the British driver now aims to follow in the footsteps of Ferrari’s legendary driver Michael Schumacher by clinching a world title in the team’s signature red racing suit.

Should he achieve this feat, the British driver would make history as the only driver in Formula 1 to secure eight world championships, while also helping the Maranello team break a long-standing dry spell in the Drivers’ Championship that has lasted since Kimi Räikkönen’s triumph in 2007, when he narrowly defeated Lewis Hamilton in his first F1 season.

However, Lewis Hamilton faces numerous challenges before that dream becomes a reality, with 19 other talented drivers on the grid aiming to disrupt his debut season with the Italian team.

While Ferrari has already scheduled Lewis Hamilton’s first session in the simulator, there is still uncertainty surrounding his first official run in a Ferrari Formula 1 car. His debut track test is expected to take place in Barcelona, and he may also participate in a Pirelli tire test at Magny-Cours later this month.

Nevertheless, his first true outing behind the wheel will occur at Ferrari’s private Fiorano test track.

In a recent appearance on The Race Podcast, motorsport journalist and F1 expert Jonathan Noble shed light on why there is some secrecy surrounding the timing of Lewis Hamilton’s initial on-track test. One concern, he explained, is Ferrari’s potential worry about the overwhelming fan turnout at Fiorano for such a historic event.

Jonathan Noble was asked about the British driver’s upcoming first test with Ferrari and explained that it was a topic of great interest and the biggest question of the winter. The motorsport journalist noted that Ferrari faced a dilemma: they did not want a massive crowd of Tifosi descending upon Fiorano to watch Hamilton’s first test. He pointed out that the track couldn’t be fully closed off, as there was a large bridge running over it. He speculated that if Ferrari were to announce a specific date and time for Hamilton’s test, the bridge would likely be crowded with spectators, causing chaos and requiring police intervention, which would create a troublesome situation.

The Italian side has taken steps to keep the details of Hamilton’s first test under wraps in order to prevent a mass influx of fans flocking to Fiorano. Despite their best efforts to maintain secrecy, there is a limited window in which Ferrari can schedule testing sessions for both Hamilton and Charles Leclerc before heading to Bahrain for the official pre-season testing. This tight timeline has already given Ferrari’s most passionate fans some clues as to when they might be able to catch a glimpse of their new driver on the track.

The anticipation for the 2025 season is growing rapidly, despite the official start not occurring until mid-March when the Formula 1 circus heads to Melbourne for the Australian Grand Prix. Hamilton made his move to Ferrari known before the 2024 season even began, a bold decision that carried its risks, especially given that he wasn’t certain whether Mercedes could recover and deliver a competitive package for the upcoming year.
