The name of Ferrari’s first fully electric car has sparked discussion across the automotive world. “Ferrari Luce” is the name expected for the historic model, but it has already attracted attention due to a past connection with Mazda. Maranello, however, has stepped in to clarify the situation.
In the automotive industry, choosing a name is never a random decision—it represents a clear statement of identity, vision, and future direction. This is exactly the case with Ferrari’s first fully electric car, which is expected to be called “Ferrari Luce.” The name is highly evocative, immediately bringing to mind concepts such as energy, innovation, and a forward-looking philosophy. It aligns perfectly with the technological revolution Ferrari is preparing to embrace in the coming years as it enters the electric era.
Mazda had already used the “Luce” name
As is often the case, history has a way of resurfacing. The name “Luce” is not entirely new in the automotive landscape. It had already been used by Mazda for a model produced between 1966 and 1991, the iconic Mazda Luce. This precedent could raise questions, particularly from a commercial and legal standpoint, in an industry where brand uniqueness plays a crucial role.
However, the situation appears far from problematic. The Mazda Luce was marketed in several international markets under a different name, “929,” which could leave room for Ferrari to maneuver. One possible solution could be for Ferrari to retain the “Luce” name globally while adopting a specific variant for the Japanese market, thereby avoiding any potential conflicts.
Maranello responds: no legal issues
Maranello has clarified the situation:
“Ferrari is the owner of the ‘Ferrari Luce’ trademark, which it has the right to use globally by virtue of its registration under international law. As usual, all preliminary checks were carried out, and they did not reveal the existence of any active third-party rights in conflict with ours.”
According to Ferrari’s own assessments, there should therefore be no legal obstacles. As a result, a name change for “Ferrari Luce”—the first fully electric car from Maranello—does not appear to be necessary.
