Lewis Hamilton aims for redemption under 2026 F1 regulations after tough Ferrari debut season
Lewis Hamilton endured the most challenging season of his illustrious Formula 1 career after moving to Ferrari for the 2025 campaign, but the seven-time world champion now begins the 2026 regulations era with renewed optimism and a clear mission to reclaim his status among the sport’s elite.
At 41 years old, Hamilton joined Scuderia Ferrari in the final year of the ground-effect regulations, hoping to reinvigorate a career that had seen declining results at Mercedes. The move, however, did not yield the immediate results he and Ferrari had anticipated. For the first time in his Formula 1 career, the Briton failed to achieve a single Grand Prix podium in a season, finishing with his lowest point total under the current scoring system, which has been in use since 2010.
Lewis Hamilton’s switch to Ferrari was agreed upon in February 2024 following consecutive winless campaigns in 2022 and 2023 at Mercedes, which struggled under the new ground-effect regulations introduced in 2022. While Lewis Hamilton managed two victories in 2024 for Mercedes, he only amassed 156 points in his debut season with Ferrari, highlighting the challenges of adapting to a new team amid a transitional regulatory environment.
Team principal Fred Vasseur’s decision to halt the development of Ferrari’s 2025 car in April in order to focus on the 2026 regulations came at a cost for both Lewis Hamilton and his teammate Charles Leclerc. The decision left the Scuderia’s 2025 package underdeveloped, impacting performance and race results. Now, with the 2026 technical regulations in effect, Ferrari is hoping that last year’s sacrifice will pay dividends for both drivers as they enter a new era of Formula 1 competition.
Hamilton feels the sting from former rivals after 2025 struggles
The Stevenage-born driver also reportedly felt “hurt” by the commentary from several of his former F1 rivals, many of whom publicly suggested that he should retire following the disappointing 2025 season. According to reports from Blick, The Briton’s seven-time world champion mindset was stirred by these remarks, motivating him to prove critics wrong and avoid ending his career on such a low note.
Last season, Lewis Hamilton faced a difficult head-to-head battle against Charles Leclerc, losing 19-5 in qualifying sessions and 18-3 in race results. The outcome of these internal team battles only intensified the criticism from pundits and former drivers, adding fuel to the Briton’s determination to return to championship contention in 2026.
Despite the tough season, Lewis Hamilton remains fully committed to pursuing an eighth F1 drivers’ championship. The introduction of the 2026 regulations is widely seen as a potential turning point for the seven-time world champion, with the new cars expected to better suit his driving style, possibly allowing him to re-enter the title fight that has eluded him since 2021.
2026 regulations could be the key to Hamilton’s comeback
Hamilton has been deeply involved in the development of Ferrari’s SF-26, the team’s first car built for the 2026 technical regulations. Reports indicate that the 105-time Grand Prix winner has been spending extensive hours in Ferrari’s simulator, averaging at least one session per week over the winter, helping engineers fine-tune the car’s setup and aerodynamics in preparation for the new season.
The true test for Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari will come when the 2026 Formula 1 season begins in Australia from March 6-8. The competitiveness of the SF-26 will determine whether Hamilton’s decision to commit to another year with Ferrari was the right one. If the car proves to be underperforming, retirement may once again become a consideration.
Lewis Hamilton’s last genuine opportunity to fight for a championship was in 2021, when he narrowly missed out on an eighth title in Abu Dhabi due to the controversial handling of the late safety car restart by then-race director Michael Masi. With the fresh 2026 regulations, Hamilton is hopeful that the new generation of F1 cars will provide the tools he needs to mount a serious challenge for another world championship and prove that he still belongs at the pinnacle of motorsport.
For F1 fans, the start of the 2026 season marks a critical moment for Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc. Both drivers are expected to push Ferrari to its limits under the new rules, aiming for victories, podiums, and potentially a historic drivers’ championship in the coming year.
