“Mick Schumacher has had too many accidents in the last few races: we have reached the point where it is too much”. With these words motorsport engineer and Haas team principal Gunther Steiner ‘wished happy holidays’ to the Ferrari junior before the summer break, at the end of the 2021 Hungarian Grand Prix.
Of course, the outgoing Formula 2 champion did not make only small erros, as his crash on the streets of Monte Carlo and at the Hungaroring circuit did not allow him to take part in the qualifying sessions, without forgetting the spin in France which did not allow him to take part in the Q2 phase of the session and cost the team more money. At the same time Haas is trying to save every euro from the budget, which does not make things any easier. However, these are the risks took by the teams that choose young drivers: on the one hand you do not have to spend a lot of money with the salary, but on the other you have to take into consideration the likelihood of some mistakes that have to be covered by the budget.
And this was exactly the claim of Michael Schumacher’s son: the need to make a mistake, even after the Hungaroring crash in the third free practice session that did not make taking part in qualifying possible: “I understand that the team has a budget to manage until the last euro, but this shouldn’t limit the drivers. It is important for me to be able to make mistakes, because you learn from these errors. I made a mistake in Hungary, the same thing happened to me in Monte Carlo. It’s not ideal, that’s for sure, but overall I’m pretty satisfied with my first half of the season. We knew it would be difficult for us to fight for the points, but we made an appearance in Q2 despite having a car that has not been developed since last year. I hope we can have even better weekends in the second half of the season. I’m sorry for Günther, but he has to accept weekends that will be even worse.” – Ferrari Driver Academy member Mick Schumacher admitted.
