Ferrari entertained and thrilled fans in the Italian Grand Prix at the 5.793-kilometre Autodromo Nazionale Monza, but there is still much work to be done to close the gap that McLaren has opened at this stage of the 2024 Formula 1 championship in order to compete for the title.
Baku and Singapore will be key moments to understand what the SF-24 can do, but for now, English senior performance engineer Jock Clear, who heads up the Driver Academy for Ferrari, explains the process and the work done by the Maranello team in order to achieve the Monza victory:
“For Ferrari, Monza is one of the most important tracks. It’s undeniable that we spend extra time trying to gain an advantage on this circuit, which doesn’t like drag but loves downforce in the corners. So, it’s difficult to find a balance, you can’t just reduce the drag to the maximum or you’ll lose speed in the corners. We are confident, given the result, that we got the balance right. You’ll never get exactly what you want because the goals are always ambitious, but Monza comes close to perfection. We saw a beautiful car, and we saw the drivers having fun here.” – legendary engineer Jock Clear explained.
