Italian journalist and Ferrari insider Leo Turrini, who is well-known for his inside sources from Maranello, shared his thoughts on the recent events, as Reports on Thursday confirmed that David Sanchez, who is Ferrari’s head of vehicle concept, has handed in his notice after more than 10 years at Maranello.
Here are the comments of Leo Turrini posted on his blog:
“On David Sanchez’s departure from Ferrari, complete with a move to McLaren, well, I promise to exercise the right to be frank.
First thing.
Fred Vasseur, in agreement with the very powerful ad Benedetto Vigna, has the duty to build a team based on his image and ideas.
V2 Ferrari.
Vigna & Vasseur.
For now, Fred is dismantling Mattia Binotto’s team. For different reasons and leaving different roles, Rosato, Giacobazzi, Sanchez have already left…
I very much doubt that other key figures of the Binotto era will remain where they are for long (names are not needed, you can imagine them by yourself).
The above statement is an indispensable premise. There is a new boss, in a short time obviously he will be responsible for the results, it would be senseless for Fred Vasseur not to surround himself with people who trust him completely. David Sanchez wasn’t on the list, period.
After that, let’s be serious.
Did it make sense to remove the head of the racing department from a ready-made 2023 car? If the president and the CEO no longer believed in Bin8 (legitimate, please), well, why did they wait so long? What prevented them from acting well in advance?
I continue.
Does it make sense to end with Sanchez after one (1) Grand Prix, after sending him to Bahrain for testing, in that very “televised” dialogue with Leclerc, when it was already understood that many things weren’t working? (In brackets, as a joke, arguing with Carletto in front of the cameras brings bad luck, see Binotto’s little finger, ehm ehm).
Question: who will follow the aerodynamic developments on the SF23? Or are there none?
You see, I understand the fans. I’m a fan too. I know some who one year ago ran after me to beg me to deliver their apologies to Binotto. Months later, the same people asked me to get Mattia fired. And today they accuse him of every wickedness.
Well, a fan can think like this. He doesn’t have to be credible. So a fan, not even me, can manage Ferrari. We would instinctively give in to emotion, which is the enemy of common sense.
My fear, while rags are flying in Maranello, is that impulses which should instead be controlled may prevail at the top, and not only from today.
Finally, I would reflect on the fact that David Sanchez too, beyond the merits and demerits that there have been, is already leaving with a letter of employment in his pocket.
Like Costa, like Allison, like Tortora, like Sassi.
Call them, if you like, coincidences.”
