19 races with 11 podiums, three pole positions and two victories. This is Scuderia Ferrari’s not-to-be-forgotten roadmap for the Mexican Grand Prix. The Maranello team will try to improve these numbers red with Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz over the next weekend, which will see the return of Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez on the Formula One calendar after two years due to the restrictions imposed by the pandemic. On the track named after the two brothers – who raced in Formula 1 precisely for the Scuderia – the Italian side’s mission will, realistically, be to try to overtake McLaren in the 2021 Formula 1 Constructor Standings, in an exciting fight for the third step of the podium. It’s hard to think of being able to challenge Red Bull and Mercedes in the fight for victory at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez.
In the past, however, Mexico was the scene of pleasant surprises for the Maranello team. The most famous dates back to 1990, with the victory of Alain Prost and the second place of Nigel Mansell, for a completely unpredictable Ferrari one-two, on a weekend in which no one expected Ferrari to score such a great result. If the English Lion had qualified in fourth place on Saturday, in fact, the Professor had only been 13th on the grid. At the end of an exciting comeback, however, also benefiting from the retirement of Ayrton Senna – at the wheel of the McLaren – due to a puncture, the then reigning world champion was the first to pass under the checkered flag. That remains the last Ferrari victory on that track to date.

In 2019 it was Charles Leclerc who tried to revive the glories of Alain Prost. However, his pole position in qualifying, accompanied by the second position of then team mate Sebastian Vettel, was not enough on Sunday. The Monegasque in fact finished the race in fourth position, with Sebastian Vettel second behind Lewis Hamilton and ahead of the other Mercedes of Valtteri Bottas. The 2019 event in Mexico City was a race to forget also for Carlos Sainz. The then McLaren driver was fourth after lap one, but eventually finished only 13th. One more reason to seek revenge this weekend.
