Scuderia Ferrari is looking forward to the official pre-season testing session in Bahrain to see if the SF21 will be more competitive than the SF1000 with the new engine and rear changes, and weather the Maranello team can fight for third place in the constructors’ standings.
With just a few days left until the presentation of the SF21, from Ferrari there are very few details regarding both in which areas the tokens were used, and by how much the gap has been reduced compared to last year. Behind this sort of press blackout, and also of the statements by Mattia Binotto at the presentation of the Charles Leclerc – Carlos Sainz line-up that alerted the Red fans, there is a fear of repeating the history of 2020.
In fact, according to Italian daily newspaper Corriere della Sera, the data from the wind tunnel and simulator is good: “Brakes pulled at Ferrari, as the team launch on Wednesday reflects the desire not to do any predictions, not even the vaguest predictions. The pressure in Maranello is very high. While the simulation data is good, morale hangs behind the scenes. Too many times in the past computers have provided easy illusions, then crumbled by the results on tne track.”
The weapon with which Ferrari aims to cancel last season is the new power unit: “Ferrari’s bet has focused on some specific areas. The first is the engine, as encouraging numbers arrive from the bench, despite knowing that the starting base was low compared to rivals, precisely because of the FIA agreement, and therefore there is ample room for improvement.” – the Italian press explained.
Instead it seems confirmed that the SF21 will not have a narrow nose, as the Maranello team decided to intervene in other areas: “The two development tokens available were spent to change the rear, an obligatory path, different from that chosen by other teams. Little can be seen with the naked eye, but here the news regard the gearbox area and the rear suspension levers. These are two focal points, which were critical last year.”
