The best Ferrari of 2023
Second place for Charles Leclerc, fourth for Carlos Sainz, who paid a high price with a five-second penalty for track limits. In front of President John Elkann, Scuderia Ferrari displayed its best performance of the 2023 Formula 1 championship, scoring 30 points that reopen the race for second place, as Aston Martin and Mercedes were clearly beaten at the Red Bull Ring.
Fred Vasseur is satisfied
“I’m certainly satisfied, although you always want something more,” said Frederic Vasseur to the microphones of Sky Sport F1. “We expect something better next weekend, but I would say that qualifying and the race went well. But we can always improve, and if we compare ourselves to Max, there is still work to be done. There have been positive steps forward since the beginning of the season after Montreal, and it confirms that we are going in the right direction. Sainz did a great job with Perez, but Sergio was clearly faster and had fresher tires, so it was more difficult for Carlos, but he still did a good job. Max was flying today, but there was a group of 10 cars that could have finished in second place, including Aston Martin, McLaren, and Mercedes, sometimes even Alpine.”
Battle over updates
“Every time we bring an improvement to the track, the results change,” added Frederic Vasseur.
“Barcelona was difficult because it was the first race with the new package, and we probably didn’t use it to its full potential. But step by step, we understand what we can do. This weekend wasn’t easy either because it was very short with only one practice session, but we did a good job that confirms everything we started in Montreal. I want to acknowledge the work of the guys in the factory. They have done an enormous job to bring the updates already this weekend. They were supposed to come later, and they worked 24 hours a day.” – the French manager pointed out after the Austrian Grand Prix.

“The progress is evident, just as it was in Montreal. Unfortunately, we didn’t do a great job on Saturday, and it’s difficult to come back when you start so far back, but the last races have gone well, and next week we’ll have a completely different track with different tire compounds. It will be a nice challenge that we gladly take on. The results don’t depend on the work or spirit of one person, but on the work of a thousand people pushing like crazy, and thanks go to them. With the new tires at Silverstone, I hope the game can change. Max will continue to be extremely fast, but compared to the early races when we were almost a lap behind, we are now 20 seconds behind. It’s certainly not easy, but the direction is right.” – Frederic Vasseur concluded.
