Ferrari holds the key to Oliver Bearman’s future as the Formula 1 driver market begins to gather momentum, according to Haas team principal Ayao Komatsu. The British driver has recently been linked with Red Bull, while Ferrari Driver Academy prospect Rafael Câmara is emerging as a credible candidate for a possible Haas seat in 2027.
The situation places Ferrari at the centre of an intriguing driver-market puzzle despite the apparent stability of its own line-up. Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton are expected to continue sharing the Maranello garage in 2027, which would represent their third consecutive season together, but the Scuderia’s influence extends well beyond its two race seats.
Ferrari holds the key to Oliver Bearman’s future
Summer traditionally accelerates negotiations across the Formula 1 paddock as teams attempt to turn preliminary discussions from earlier in the year into firm agreements for the following season. Within that delicate game of musical chairs, Ferrari could play a central role because it retains contractual control over Oliver Bearman.
The British driver currently races for Haas, a team connected to Ferrari through a close technical partnership and a broader sporting relationship. Oliver Bearman’s performances have made him an increasingly prominent figure in the driver market, with Red Bull reportedly monitoring the Ferrari junior as a possible option if Max Verstappen ultimately decides to leave the Milton Keynes team.
Ayao Komatsu indicated that Ferrari, rather than Haas, would have the decisive say over the young driver’s future.
“Would we stand in the way if Oliver Bearman were to leave? No, not from our side,” the Japanese team principal told Sky Sports F1. “Obviously, we are focused on what we can do regarding Ollie’s contract, but that mainly concerns Ferrari.
“If we do a good job and Ollie shines, then of course we would like to keep him in the team, but it does not depend on us. We are therefore concentrating only on what we can control.”
However, it appears difficult to imagine Ferrari allowing Oliver Bearman to leave its structure and join Red Bull at this stage. The most likely outcome is therefore for the driver of car number 87 to continue his development at Haas while remaining under Ferrari’s control, although the reported interest from elsewhere underlines the importance of clarifying his longer-term Formula 1 pathway.
Rafael Câmara enters the Haas 2027 driver puzzle
Another prominent name in discussions surrounding Ferrari and Haas is Rafael Câmara. The young Brazilian won the 2025 Formula 3 championship and currently occupies third place in the Formula 2 standings after an impressive campaign.
Rafael Câmara is also a member of the Ferrari Driver Academy and is regarded as a credible candidate to replace Esteban Ocon at Haas. That possibility would only arise if the American team decided not to renew the French driver’s contract.
Leonardo Fornaroli, who belongs to McLaren’s driver development programme, is also understood to be in contention. Ayao Komatsu nevertheless made clear that Haas is under no obligation to favour the Ferrari-backed candidate simply because of the technical partnership between the two teams.
“Obviously, we are completely focused on getting the most from our two current drivers,” Ayao Komatsu explained. “We support Esteban Ocon 100 per cent. At the moment, that is the only thing we are thinking about.
“And to be clear, yes, Rafa is doing a good job, but it is not as though Ferrari is pushing us to take him or anything like that. We choose drivers based on performance. Whoever guarantees us the best performance will be our driver.”
Performance will decide Haas driver choice
Ayao Komatsu’s comments leave both sides of the Haas driver equation open. Oliver Bearman’s future will largely depend on Ferrari’s plans and whether another team attempts to secure his services, while Esteban Ocon’s position will be assessed according to his performances and Haas’s priorities for 2027.
Rafael Câmara’s progress has nevertheless added another important element to Ferrari’s long-term driver strategy. With Oliver Bearman already gaining Formula 1 experience and Rafael Câmara impressing in Formula 2, the Scuderia possesses two young drivers capable of influencing not only its own future but also the next stage of Haas’s development.
