Ferrari highlight the ‘positive problem’ McLaren must solve as F1 championship battle intensifies. Frédéric Vasseur believes McLaren’s internal battle between Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri for the F1 title is a positive problem.

Fred Vasseur (Ferrari), Zak Brown (McLaren), 2025 F1

Ferrari team principal Frédéric Vasseur has shared his view on the ongoing Formula 1 championship battle, describing McLaren’s situation with Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri both fighting for the Drivers’ Championship as a “positive problem” for the British team. The Frenchman believes that having two title contenders within the same team is a sign of remarkable progress — even as Max Verstappen continues to pose a serious threat to their title hopes.

With only four races remaining in the 2025 Formula 1 season, the McLaren teammates are separated by a single point in the standings. Meanwhile, Max Verstappen, driving for Red Bull Racing, remains 36 points behind, keeping himself within striking distance of the leaders. Norris recently surged back to the top of the championship after an impressive victory at the Mexico City Grand Prix, marking his first return to the top spot in 15 rounds.

Despite the intense competition between its two drivers, McLaren appears to have no intention of favoring one over the other. Team CEO Zak Brown has reportedly made it clear that he would rather see the Dutchman win the title than risk internal conflict by prioritizing one driver’s campaign over the other. The Woking-based team’s philosophy of allowing both Norris and Piastri to fight freely has created one of the most intriguing intra-team rivalries in recent years.

Fred Vasseur, when asked about the situation, suggested that this kind of internal competition reflects McLaren’s impressive development and depth. According to the former Alfa Romeo team boss, it demonstrates that the team has successfully built a car capable of consistently fighting at the front. He pointed out that the performance balance between Norris and Piastri has been fluid throughout the season — with each driver enjoying stronger weekends at different circuits — and he expects that trend to continue until the final race.

The Ferrari boss emphasized that such close competition benefits not just McLaren but also the entire sport. Fred Vasseur highlighted that this unpredictable battle between teams and drivers has brought new life to the championship, turning each race into a strategic and emotional contest for fans and teams alike.

Beyond the drivers’ battle, the Constructors’ Championship is also tightening rapidly. Ferrari currently holds a slender advantage over Mercedes in the fight for third place, with just a single point separating the two teams. Meanwhile, Red Bull, after dominating in recent years, now finds itself just a few points adrift — a sign of how competitive the grid has become in 2025.

Fred Vasseur noted that this closeness in performance and points is exactly what Formula 1 needs, adding that Max Verstappen’s resurgence only enhances the excitement of the title fight. He believes that the presence of multiple teams capable of winning races and challenging for podiums is proof that the sport has entered one of its most balanced eras in recent memory.

As the Frenchman summed up, this year’s unpredictable battle — with three top teams and multiple drivers still in contention — is “good for Formula 1, good for the spectacle, and good for the fans.” For Ferrari, McLaren, and Red Bull alike, every point earned in the remaining rounds could prove decisive in shaping both the Drivers’ and Constructors’ Championships.
