There have been a lot of discussions and analyzes regarding the strengths of Scuderia Ferrari’s car for the 2022 Formula One season after the first two rounds of the new campaign and many pinpointed the sidepods and general aerodynamic design as a key factor for the performance of Ferrari F1-75’s, which is currently leading in the Formula 1 drivers and constructors world championships, ahead of the 2022 Australian Grand Prix.
But substantial ongoing positive changes have also been made on the power unit side. The engine produced by the historic Italian team has managed to recover the gap that separated it from its competitors Mercedes and Honda in the last two years, and it is common opinion that it is currently the benchmark Formula 1 power unit: “We have put the thermal efficiency at the center of the project, therefore the energy conversion efficiency from the one introduced with the fuel to the mechanical one that reaches the crankshaft” – explained the chief engineer of the Maranello team, Enrico Gualtieri, adding: “The contribution of our innovation partner Shell was invaluable in the process, also considering the introduction of the new E10 fuel this year”. Ferrari has changed its approach compared to the recent past: “We pushed on the introduction of innovations, took the programs to the limit and took all the risks necessary to reach the targets we set ourselves,” assured the engineer from Modena, as reported by formulapassion.it.
Rumours inside the paddock talk about a possible introduction of the second power unit this season already in Imola or Miami, as Enrico Gualtieri has neither denied nor confirmed this information: “On this aspect I cannot answer. The improvement in reliability, of which we are still understanding the limits, is continuous “. Work on ERS will also continue, which will be approved in September, as Formula 1’s power unit freeze comes into force this season until 2025: “The increase in performance will be less than in 2021, when we changed the architecture of the system. Today we are working on optimizing the package already used on the car”, assured Enrico Gualtieri in a recent interview for Italian daily newspaper Corriere dello Sport.
