Scuderia Ferrari Team Principal Mattia Binotto feels that after their ultimately failed Formula 1 title charges back in 2017 and 2018, the Maranello team are now in a better position to be able to fight with rivals Red Bull and Mercedes. The Italian side had initially challenged Mercedes for the Formula 1 titles during two consecutive campaigns, but could only keep up with their opponents for the first half of the season, only to fall away in the second half, as the Silver Arrows were able to improve their car and gain pace as compared to the Ferrari cars of Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen.
With the previous experience and a lot of work invested in the F1-75 car for this year, team boss Mattia Binotto is confident Scuderia Ferrari can not only maintain their early-season form but build on it for the rest of the 2022 Formula 1 season. For now, the Maranello team and Red Bull seem the be the only teams able to challenge for race wins in the first races of the new championship, as Mercedes struggle to fix their problems and recover the gap to their rivals.
Mattia Binotto pointed out once again that the development curve among the teams will be a steep one, but maintains the belief the Maranello team can sustain a challenge – if they play their cards right and continue to develop the F1-75 car: “I think keeping up the level of development through the season is always a challenge, not only for us but all of the teams.” – the Ferrari boss explained.
“It is true our competitors are very strong in that and proved to be very strong, while as Ferrari the last two opportunities we had [in] 2017 and 2018 we lost a bit of ground through development. Since then, as for the car design, we have improved our tools which are wind tunnel, methodologies, process and simulator. I think today we are much better prepared compared to the past to do the proper job as well in development. We need as well to add, compared to the time today we have the budget cap which will influence the rate of development, and I think that’s a key point and a key element. My concern is we need to make sure we have got the right policy on that as it can be a game-changer in the fight for development.” – Mattia Binotto concluded.
