There will be a Ferrari F1-75 tomorrow in pole position for the British Grand Prix, but it will not be #16, but #55. Carlos Sainz, in fact, secured the first pole position of his career thanks to a great final lap, the decisive one, while Charles Leclerc spun at the exit of the Chapel in an attempt to beat Max Verstappen, who seemed unbeatable today, but who has had to raise his foot due to the yellow flag caused by the Monegasque driver who was behind Carlos Sainz, but ahead of the Dutchman at that stage of the lap.
Ferrari team principal Mattia Binotto underlined that in any case the first pole of the Spanish driver’s career is absolutely deserved: “Everyone is happy for Carlos Sainz. He deserved it. He has been looking for it and has been hoping for it for a long time. Pole has arrived at Silverstone on a difficult track and in unpredictable conditions, so it is well deserved. He has more and more confidence with this car. He was able to stay calm in difficult conditions and I think it was that calm which allowed him to do such a great lap at that moment. The track conditions changed and you had to keep the tire temperatures in the correct window at the right time. This you can do only if you are lucid. His ability to remain calm and precise is the merit of today’s pole. Carlos is improving race after race. He had a good performance in Canada, but there, for example, in qualifying he had exaggerated. Instead, here he knew how to wait and was reworded. I think it was his mental work to approach qualifying and the weekend. He waited for the right moment and collected the maximum.” – the team principal of the Maranello team explained to Sky Sport F1.
“Max was certainly fast and strong, he was also fast in FP3 in the dry – added Mattia Binotto regarding the more than fierce competition from the reigning champion – he proved to be fast even in qualifying, but we fought and tried to get the best out of the car. We were competitive because getting first and third with Charles third due to a mistake, in these conditions, shows that the car is strong in both dry and wet conditions. Now we focus on tomorrow’s race. It will be the most important part of the weekend.” – Scuderia Ferrari team principal Mattia Binotto concluded.
