Race Summary: McLaren dominate the British Grand Prix with a 1-2 finish, while Nico Hülkenberg finally reaches the Formula 1 podium for the first time in his long career during a race full of chaos and drama.
Lando Norris secured a sensational victory at Silverstone, becoming a home race winner for the first time in his career. Right behind him was his teammate Oscar Piastri, completing a dream one-two finish for McLaren. However, the day will be remembered in the history books for another reason: Nico Hülkenberg, after an astonishing 239 Grand Prix starts, finally scored his very first podium in Formula 1. The German driver broke the infamous record for the most race starts without a podium finish, a statistic that now returns to Adrian Sutil.
Lewis Hamilton delivered a strong performance with multiple overtakes and finished just off the podium in fourth place. Max Verstappen followed in fifth, ahead of Pierre Gasly and Lance Stroll, who benefited from a bold strategic call. Fernando Alonso, Alexander Albon, and George Russell rounded out the points. It was a disastrous afternoon for Charles Leclerc, who finished only 14th after a race marred by driver errors and questionable team decisions. He ended ahead only of Yuki Tsunoda. Retirements included Kimi Antonelli, Isack Hadjar, Gabriel Bortoleto, and Liam Lawson, while Franco Colapinto did not start due to technical issues.
Unusual Start and Split Strategies
At the start, most of the grid opted for intermediate tyres, but George Russell, Charles Leclerc, Isack Hadjar, Gabriel Bortoleto, and Oliver Bearman took the gamble to start from the pit lane on slicks. Contact between Esteban Ocon and Liam Lawson on the opening lap triggered a Virtual Safety Car (VSC). Mercedes also pitted Kimi Antonelli for hard tyres, momentarily putting both Silver Arrows near the front of the pack. On lap 6, Bortoleto crashed into the barriers, triggering another VSC and forcing his retirement.
After about ten laps, heavier rain dashed the hopes of everyone except Lance Stroll. The Canadian had switched to soft tyres under the earlier VSC and made up critical ground before the downpour, which helped secure his fourth-place finish. Even drivers on intermediates had to pit again due to tyre wear on the drying track.
Piastri Pulls Away, Safety Car Neutralizes Gap
By lap 6, Oscar Piastri overtook Max Verstappen at Stowe corner. Verstappen struggled with a low-downforce setup and was passed by Lando Norris shortly after. However, Norris suffered a slow pit stop, allowing Verstappen to briefly regain position. With a 10-second gap to the leader, heavy rain forced the deployment of the Safety Car. Meanwhile, Lewis Hamilton lost momentum and dropped to eighth.
On lap 19, after the restart, Russell and Hamilton swapped positions in a fierce battle. Hadjar collided with Antonelli at Abbey and retired, causing a second Safety Car. At the restart, Piastri appeared to brake-check Verstappen and was handed a 10-second time penalty. Verstappen then spun just before the green flag and fell to 10th.
Second Half: Return of the Slicks
The collision had damaged Antonelli’s car, forcing his retirement. Behind the McLarens, Stroll and Hülkenberg battled for podium spots, while Hamilton passed Russell and Gasly to take fifth. On lap 35, with DRS re-enabled, Hülkenberg moved up to third, followed shortly by Hamilton, dropping Stroll to fifth.
Fernando Alonso was the first to gamble on slicks—mediums—on lap 38. Russell followed on hards a lap later but spun at the Maggotts-Becketts section, luckily avoiding damage. By lap 42, many others, including Lewis Hamilton, switched to slicks, with the Briton opting for softs. Nico Hülkenberg pitted one lap later for mediums and stayed ahead of Hamilton, who made a small mistake on his outlap.
Lando Norris capitalized on Piastri’s penalty and claimed the lead. The final laps saw little drama, aside from Stroll losing positions to Max Verstappen and Pierre Gasly.
