The presentation of the Ferrari drivers and in general of the 2021 season from the point of view of the Prancing Horse, pending the new car, remained suspended between the desire to take the place that should belong in Maranello and an understandable caution, given that no one believes Ferrari have in their hands a ‘package’ superior to that of Mercedes .
The reactions were not late. On the Resto del Carlino , Leo Turrini spoke of a ‘red zone’ Ferrari , which starts the championship by holding back its ambitions: “The setting was a dream: the hall of triumphs of the Maranello museum, the Sancta Sanctorum of Ferrari. But the suggestion stopped there: because Mattia Binotto, Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz have chosen to fly low. Prudence, prudence and more prudence: the new Red team gives up any form of optimism. […] The impression is that Binotto bitterly regretted that declaration issued at the beginning of 2019. He said: we will open an era. Words are stones and they are also a boomerang. […] It hurts the fan’s heart to keep hearing promises entrusted to the future. In the name of realism, Ferrari is telling us that victories will be back in 2022, when the whole Formula One will start from scratch, with new cars and rules. The approach is legitimate. The Red, which will debut in a month in the Sakhir dunes, has declared a place in the… Europa League as its objective . No Champions League area, no Scudetto. Limited ambitions, forbidden promises”.
The Corriere della Sera, in the same way, reads: “The fear of making a mistake, the desire to fly low after the blow, lead to an ultra-prudent attitude, the references to fighting for the podium a few months ago have also disappeared. Hopefully it is just a strategy to lower the pressure, which is a lot. The car for Binotto has at least solved some critical limitations”. This is based on the simulation data.
“Maranello works for the future. Not the immediate one that is almost upon us, but the one that will begin in 2022, with the revolution of F1 regulations. No imminent ransom, no proclamation. Too soon, too few margins for intervention on the car, too low has the Red fallen to be reborn [immediately] from the ashes of a disheartening season like the past one: 6th place in the Constructors’ standings, never so bad in 40 years. For dreams of redemption you need to work. Looking far into the future” – writes La Repubblica. In 2021, Ferrari will not invest more than it should, because if the car that will race this year is based on a failed project, the corrections made may not be enough to give the Red the necessary sprint to go up there, in the Hamilton area. Caution, prudence, patience: these could be the keywords for Ferrari’s 2021 Formula 1 season.
