There is also a special mention for one of the most controversial Grands Prix in recent years, the 2019 Formula 1 Canadian Grand Prix at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve: Sebastian Vettel won the race, but the victory was taken away from him due to a five-second penalty, received for allegedly rejoining the circuit in an unsafe manner.

Predictably, Sebastian Vettel’s was extremely angry at the end of the Canadian Grand Prix: in one of the images that will go down in Formula 1 history, the German driver picked up the #1 board placed in front of the Mercedes car of Lewis Hamilton and swapped it for the #2 in front of his Ferrari. He then stormed off and did not want to take part in the podium ceremony before changing his mind as a “matter of respect” to his rivals.
The Ferrari driver was not the only one to disagree about the decision and to label the penalty as unfair, with many other current and former drivers siding with Sebastian Vettel. Even Lewis Hamilton himself eventually admitted he would have done the same as the German driver in a similar on-track moment.
