Ferrari has reportedly secured approval from the FIA to introduce an upgraded engine through the Additional Development and Upgrade Opportunity (ADUO) program, a significant step in the Scuderia’s campaign to close the performance gap with Mercedes. The ADUO system allows teams identified as lagging in power unit performance to implement technical upgrades during the Formula 1 season, providing a regulated pathway to reduce deficits against the front-runners.
Sources indicate that Ferrari fits the eligibility criteria for ADUO, with an estimated shortfall of approximately 25 horsepower compared to the benchmark Mercedes power unit. The FIA has granted the green light for Ferrari to deploy the new engine specifications following the Miami Grand Prix, marking an important milestone in Maranello’s strategy to enhance competitiveness across both internal combustion and hybrid performance metrics.
Timing of the New Ferrari Power Unit
According to Formula 1 technical analyst Julianne Cerasoli, Ferrari has been authorized to introduce the updated engine starting from the Canadian Grand Prix. However, the debut of the new power unit will depend on the readiness of the updated specifications and the team’s chosen testing schedule. Ferrari may opt to take advantage of a dedicated test window during the Barcelona Grand Prix weekend, scheduled from June 12 to 14, to validate performance improvements before full race deployment.
Official data suggests that Ferrari’s current power unit remains roughly 2% less potent than the Mercedes engine, which continues to set the benchmark in Formula 1 for thermal and hybrid efficiency. This deficit translates to an estimated 15 horsepower loss on the internal combustion side, affecting not only raw engine output but also energy recovery and deployment through the hybrid system. The gap has been particularly evident in high-energy sections of circuits, where the Ferrari SF-26 struggled to match Mercedes in both acceleration and sustained lap performance during the opening three rounds of the season.
Impact on Ferrari’s Championship Push
From the Canadian Grand Prix onwards, Ferrari plans to leverage the new engine upgrade alongside a series of aerodynamic and chassis improvements to reduce the performance gap to Mercedes. Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton are expected to benefit directly from these enhancements, which are designed to optimize both lap pace and energy management. The team aims to use the combination of the ADUO-approved power unit and incremental technical upgrades to bolster the SF-26’s competitiveness, enabling Ferrari to contend more effectively for podium finishes and maintain pressure in the Formula 1 championship standings.
Overall, the introduction of the ADUO engine upgrade represents a strategic victory for Ferrari, signaling Maranello’s commitment to continuous development and its determination to challenge Mercedes over the remaining races of the 2026 Formula 1 season.
