We were under way here for Practice Two at Sao Paulo, and it was a pair of Aston Martins leading out the pack. With the Sprint Race coming later, it is likely we would see some longer runs in this session as teams tried to see how their car went for longer periods at the Autódromo José Carlos Pace, better known as Interlagos.
We were just over five minutes into this session, but it is the Ferrari F1-75 cars that were setting the early pace, Charles Leclerc setting a 1:15.868 on the soft tyres, with Carlos Sainz +0.146s on the medium just behind. It was clear that many of the teams wee using this session to see what tyre they think will be most useful for the Sprint race later today.
There hadn’t been too much change at the top, but Pierre Gasly made some real improvement, putting himself third and just +0.720 off the pace of George Russell. Earlier in proceedings there was a close call for Nicholas Latifi as he locked up and ran wide at Turn 12 and got back out on track. Red Bull put both their drivers on the hard tyre and they looked to be getting in some longer race runs. Max Verstappen sat 12th on the timesheet with a very unrepresentative time.
Williams looked to get Logan Sargeant his super licence points as the American racing driver needed to complete 100km in this session which equates to 24 laps. With 25 minutes to go, he completed 21, so that target was very much in his sights as he got out on the soft tyres. He sat 13th on the timesheet. We had just under 20 minutes left of this session, but there wasn’t much movement on the timesheet: Esteban Ocon still sat top with Sergio Perez +0.184s behind. They were then followed by George Russell, Max Verstappen, and Lewis Hamilton.
With 15 minutes until the end of the final free practice session for the 2022 Formula 1 Brazilian Grand Prix, Logan Sargeant completed his task for this session as he got past 24 laps, going for his 27th. There were eight minutes to go, but today’s session was over for Logan Sargeant: he was back in his garage after completing 28 laps.
It was a session that started with some flying laps and ended with some longer runs as Esteban Ocon put himself at the top of the timesheet with a 1:14.604. All is to play for in the Sprint race later and it will be interesting to see what tyres teams opt for. Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc ended FP2 outside the top ten, with the Spanish driver in P11 (1m15.856s) and Charles Leclerc P13 (1m15.868s)
