Friday practice for the 2022 British Grand Prix continued with FP2 this evening, after the first practice session did not provide the drivers with great conditions for track testing given the rain. But what a difference a few hours makes, with Silverstone that was now bathed in sunshine.
It was not exactly boiling, but these were much better conditions for fast times and we finally got to see some car comparisons.
It looked like Max Verstappen was starting his first fast lap with a bit of an issue as he sent a message to his team: “I hear a bit of a weird noise but if you think it is okay I will continue.” However, was told everything looked ok and he set off on his flying lap, setting a time of 1:31.438 and putting himself top of the timesheet. The Red Bull driver’s lead didn’t last for long as the Ferrari cars came out to set their first times of the second practice session and went straight to first and second, Charles Leclerc on top with a 1:30.786 followed by teammate Carlos Sainz just +0.094s behind him. They were then followed by Max Verstappen, Valtteri Bottas and Sergio Perez.
That top spot kept changing as each Ferrari and Red Bull set a new time. Lewis Hamilton then sat just behind them in fifth, his teammate George Russell down in 14th being held up in traffic. After the first 30 minutes there were plenty of soft tyres on track and Lando Norris went fastest of all. He posted a 1:29.1, three tenths quicker than Charles whose time of course came on the mediums. And of course Lando Norris didn’t have that top spot for long as Carlos Sainz on the soft tyres put in a 1:29.014.

The Spanish driver therefore set the pace for Ferrari in the second free practice session for the 2022 British Grand Prix at the Silverstone circuit, with Lewis Hamilton showing encouraging pace for Mercedes in second (but had a slight issue right at the end) and Lando Norris with a strong showing in third place. Charles Leclerc finished fifth, about half a second behind his Maranello teammate.
