Scuderia Ferrari is aware that it cannot afford to make a wrong step with the development of the F1-75 car in order to continue the strong form after the positive start to the 2022 Formula One championship. The Maranello team took the spotlight in Bahrain and despite the encouraging results in pre-season testing, not a lot of people expected a one-two finish in Sakhir, as Ferrari delivered a perfect opening to the 2022 Formula 1 campaign, with Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz finishing ahead of Lewis Hamilton.
But in a Formula 1 season where it is predicted there will be an aggressive development war between Ferrari, Red Bull and Mercedes, the current form book is likely to be shaken up a lot as teams gradually introduce upgrades. The situation is further complicated, however, by restrictions imposed by the Formula 1 cost cap, which means teams cannot simply throw all the money they like at bringing steps forward to the track.
Scuderia Ferrari team principal Mattia Binotto is aware of this and carefully evaluates the future pitfalls of developments not working as expected, pointing out that there is still a lot more performance which can be extracted from the current F1-75 car.
“There is still potential in the car certainly, but we do need to develop the car,” said Mattia Binotto after the first round of the 2022 Formula 1 season – “When you have a good baseline, and when you are developing, you need to make sure that whatever you’re bringing to the car is a step forward. And that’s even more important now that we got a budget cap. We cannot make it wrong. We will have only a few opportunities of development and, whatever we will do, we need to make sure that those are the proper and the right ones.” – he explained.

Despite Scuderia Ferrari’s amazing result in the 2022 Bahrain Grand Prix, Mattia Binotto admitted that Red Bull remains favourite for the Formula 1 world title given the so little pace difference between them.
