The Belgian Grand Prix was set for a thriller: Max Verstappen started from P14 at the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps, just ahead of Charles Leclerc, near the back of the grid, while Red Bull’s Sergio Perez and Carlos Sainz in the other F1-75 car sat on the front row, with both Mercedes and Fernando Alonso breathing down their necks as the race got underway at Spa.
It could have been a great royal but by lap 12 of the Belgian Grand Prix, the 2021 Formula 1 world champion had already taken the lead of the race and there was noting stopping him from securing a comfortable win in Belgium, as he left the competition in his dust.
For the first time in the 2022 Formula 1 season, Scuderia Ferrari was not able to even come close to the Dutchman’s performance. Examining the his pace shows the staggering margin that he had over the rest. It also shows clearly why nobody could challenge him, as blocked brake ducts and tyre degradation hampered the Maranello team, while Sergio Perez continues to struggle with the latest-spec Red Bull.
After the Belgian Grand Prix, Ferrari is aware that all it can hope for this year is prove it can still challenge Red Bull and take at least a few more race wins, in a season that started so promising for the Maranello team: two victories and a second place finish for Charles Leclerc in the first three rounds of 2022 gave a lot of hope to the fans and the F1-75 was indeed a car capable of winning races ahead of the Spa event. Unfortunately, a combination of poor strategy calls, power unit reliability issues and a few driver mistakes led to many wasted opportunities for Ferrari in the first part of the season, as Red Bull has now showed signs of significant improvement, leaving the Italian side not a lot to hope for.

As a result, Ferrari will have to use the final eight rounds of the 2022 F1 championship to improve both its car and its operational procedures for the next campaign. And Mattia Binotto confirmed that work is also carried out on project ‘675’, the car for the 2023 Formula 1 season: “We are in September so our 2023 car is defined in terms of chassis, suspension, gearbox. We need to push on aerodynamics, the regulation is stable so developing on the weak points of this year is useful for both cars.” – the Ferrari team principal said, ahead of the Dutch Grand Prix.
