Red Bull Racing Dutch driver Max Verstappen won the 2022 Formula 1 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix at the Jeddah Corniche Circuit in a sprint race against Scuderia Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, taking advantage of some favorable episodes listed by Ferrari team principal Mattia Binotto at the end of the Grand Prix, in an interview for Sky Sport F1:
“Today’s race was decided by some episode. I personally regret Max’s unsafe release on Carlos. If Carlos doesn’t slow down, he goes straight into him. The telemetry data is clear in our opinion, we immediately communicated the episode to the Race Direction, but they did not consider that there were the extremes for the penalty. Then on the occasion of the restart Sergio Perez did not return the position to Carlos Sainz (protecting the second position of Max Verstappen, ed). These are all episodes that can decide the race. Having said that it was a spectacular race. They all drove very well. We are sorry for today’s result, but from 88 points in two races we took home 78. We almost did not take pole yesterday, then we got second and third place in the race with fastest lap. 78 points out of 88. Red Bull are also very strong, we have to admit this. Max had a great race. The restart after the Virtual Safety Car did not reward us. We had gained two seconds, which at that stage allowed us to be a little more comfortable managing the lead. Instead, after the restart we found Max Verstappen attached to our gearbox ” – Scuderia Ferrari team principal Mattia Binotto concluded after the 2022 Formula 1 Saudi Arabian GP.
