Bad news continues for Scuderia Ferrari during the Singapore Grand Prix weekend: Carlos Sainz has been summoned by the stewards and risks facing penalties. He must explain what happened after his crash in qualifying, which left his Ferrari destroyed and could now cost him a penalty or a reprimand.
After crashing while preparing for his pole lap, Carlos Sainz hit the wall with his SF-24, causing significant damage to the rear of the car and possibly serious damage to the gearbox as well. But beyond the damage, there’s also the risk of further consequences. After the incident, the Spanish driver crossed the track to return to the pits, as the crash occurred on the start-finish straight near the final corner. He likely chose to cut across the track to get back.
However, crossing the track is not permitted, which triggered the stewards’ intervention. As a result, the Ferrari driver has been called in by the FIA race stewards to clarify his position and discuss the regulation that was violated.
The FIA statement explains: “Any driver who fails to navigate Turn 2 using the track and completely passes to the right of the orange curb must stay to the right of the white and red polystyrene block and re-enter the track outside of Turn 3.”
This is not the first piece of bad news for Ferrari during this almost cursed Marina Bay weekend. Before qualifying, Charles Leclerc also had to meet with the stewards to explain the non-compliant tire pressure readings on his car. In Charles Leclerc’s case, Ferrari received a fine, while Carlos Sainz may simply face a reprimand for non-compliant behavior. A penalty could be deemed too severe, but we’ll see what the race stewards decide.
