Ferrari: F1 paddock figures question whether Lewis Hamilton can realistically fight for another F1 championship. Many F1 insiders question whether Lewis Hamilton can realistically chase another world title at Ferrari in 2026.

Lewis Hamilton, Ferrari 2026 F1

Many figures within the Formula 1 paddock are reportedly skeptical about Lewis Hamilton’s ability to contend for another world title as he enters his 20th season in the sport at 41 years old. Sources suggest that some insiders believe the seven-time world champion’s current performance trajectory indicates a decline that may be difficult to reverse.

Lewis Hamilton is set to make history as the first driver to compete in 20 consecutive F1 seasons, surpassing his current tie with Rubens Barrichello. Only Fernando Alonso, who is approaching his 23rd season, has more overall experience on the grid.

Last year highlighted the challenges facing Lewis Hamilton at Ferrari. In 2024, he finished outside the top six in the drivers’ championship for the first time in his career. While he slightly improved his standings in 2025, he also went an entire season without reaching the podium – another career first, underscoring the difficulties of competing at the top level over two decades.

Legacy concerns: insiders warn Hamilton could be harming his reputation at Ferrari

According to The Telegraph, Lewis Hamilton is determined to control the timing of his own retirement, seeking to leave Formula 1 on his own terms rather than risk being sidelined by Ferrari. The report indicates that while the Briton signed a three-year contract upon joining the Scuderia, exit clauses could allow him to reassess his future this season, giving him flexibility to decide whether to continue.

Hamilton is reportedly motivated by a desire to rewrite the ending of his career, driven by unresolved disappointment from the 2021 season. He still believes he can become F1’s first eight-time world champion. However, multiple insiders feel that this pursuit may be unrealistic, suggesting that the Briton is increasingly “deluding himself” and running the risk of causing “irreparable damage” to his legacy if he continues to chase titles past his prime.

Experts in the paddock emphasize that while Lewis Hamilton remains one of the sport’s most skilled drivers, time affects every athlete differently. They point out that even someone as successful as Hamilton cannot escape the natural decline that comes with age. While Fernando Alonso continues to impress at 44, the rate of performance decay varies between individuals, and Hamilton’s current form raises doubts among his peers.

Historical perspective: winning in your 40s is extremely rare

Hamilton last claimed the drivers’ championship in 2020, meaning a potential 2026 title would come six years after his last triumph. Historically, very few drivers have achieved such long gaps between championships. Niki Lauda holds the record for the longest interval between titles from 1977 to 1984, while it has been six decades since a driver in their 40s won the championship, with Jack Brabham as the last to do so.

This historical context underscores the challenge facing Lewis Hamilton. While Ferrari may provide him with a competitive car, the question remains whether he can consistently perform at the level required to beat younger rivals, including Charles Leclerc, who remains Ferrari’s long-term championship prospect. Beating the Monegasque in a season with a competitive Ferrari car would represent a monumental achievement for Lewis Hamilton at this stage of his career.

Challenges for Hamilton this season

The start of the 2026 season presents additional hurdles for Lewis Hamilton. He will begin the year working with an interim race engineer, which industry insiders, including Jolyon Palmer, believe could affect his performance. Ferrari plans to bring in Cedric Grosjean once his post-McLaren gardening leave concludes, but early races may test Lewis Hamilton’s adaptability and focus.

Damon Hill has observed Ferrari’s testing sessions and believes the team is “in the mix” for the championship. However, even with a strong car, the pressure will be on Lewis Hamilton to capitalize on the opportunity and demonstrate that he can still compete at the highest level, particularly against the talented Charles Leclerc.

While Lewis Hamilton’s ambition and experience remain unquestioned, insiders suggest that the combination of age, historical trends, and emerging competition may make a 2026 championship pursuit one of the most challenging chapters of his illustrious career.
