Scuderia Ferrari differentiated the preparation of the two F1-75 cars for the 2022 Formula 1 Canadian Grand Prix at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve: Carlos Sainz was tasked with chasing his first pole position, to counter the pace of the world championship leader, Max Verstappen.
The rear wing mounted on the Spanish driver’s F1-75 car has slightly more downforce heavier, to allow Carlos to have the necessary downforce to face the wet qualifying session. The goal was to put the Iberian in front to create a sort of “cap” that would facilitate Charles Leclerc’s comeback from the back of the grid.
On the F1-75 of the Monegasque driver, on the other hand, a rear wing with less downforce was approved, which should help Charles as he attempts a lot of overtaking moves today. The difference between the two configurations is easily recognizable because one of the main weaknesses of Ferrari in this first part of the 2022 Formula 1 season was the slower open wing speed compared to the Red Bull RB18.
The aerodynamicists of David Sanchez have tried to remedy this problem, introducing on the F1-75 of Charles a rear wing that reduces the drag: not so much in the moving part of the flap which, when it opens, becomes neutral, but in the areas that support the side profile.

Instead of having a right-angled edge, the version adopted by Charles Leclerc is rounded, with a reduction in the front section, useful for aiming at higher maximum speeds. In short, Ferrari is making an important effort to counter the competitiveness of the RB18 in a world championship that is still very long and not compromised despite the recent setbacks.
It is right for Ferrari to try with all possible solutions. But at the same time it is fair to add that Carlos Sainz, equipped with a more loaded wing, will be slightly penalized during the race which will be held in dry conditions, because Max Verstappen and also the fearsome Fernando Alonso will have slightly more top speed.
