Unsurprisingly, the Baku weekend featured several harsh statements on the subject of flexible wings. Toto Wolff and Christian Horner spared no effort, with McLaren’s Andreas Seidl reiterating that in the event of evidence of suspicious downturns, the FIA must take action.
In an interview for Sky Sport F1, Ferrari’s sporting director and head of track operations Laurent Mekies presented Ferrari’s point of view on the issue. The Maranello team will have to update its rear wing design following the technical directives issued by the FIA and by the delegate Nick Tombazis in particular. This is the only thought in Maranello, without giving way to controversy.
“Since last weekend we have been focused on ourselves – the words of Mekies – we know that there is a lot of discussion about the wings, but for us it is an issue that has been managed by the FIA. There has been a whole series of technical directives, I don’t even remember how many, which define the number of tests that must be done on these wings. Then we talk about rear wings and not front ones. We are preparing to pass these tests and leave out other aspects to focus on ourselves. We think it is right as a team to do this and also for sport, to focus on the sporting aspects. Explain it to the fans? The question is good. Here, however, it is not like in offside football, the situation is not black or white. We have chosen not to enter this battle here and to focus on ourselves. We rely on the Federation ”. – the Ferrari boss concluded.
