Scuderia Ferrari Monegasque driver Charles Leclerc claimed his second win of the 2022 Formula One championship with a thumping, pole-to-flag victory at the Australian Grand Prix on Sunday as Red Bull’s world champion Max Verstappen suffered once again from reliability problems and hat to retire, just like in the Bahrain Grand Prix. Charles Leclerc’s car was dominant on the upgraded Albert Park circuit as the Monagesque sealed his fourth career win more than 20 seconds ahead of Red Bull’s runnerup Sergio Perez.
However, the Maranello team’s celebrations were tempered by Carlos Sainz crashing out shortly after the start. The Spanish driver went off the track at White corner and his race ended there. But Scuderia Ferrari Team Principal Mattia Binotto pointed out that a decision regarding the status of second driver is not even in discussion at this stage of the season. Carlos Sainz simply had an unlucky weekend and the Ferrari boss expects to see him once again at the top, putting pressure on Charles Leclerc: “We are not asking ourselves this aspect at the moment. They are both very fast. Carlos is looking for the best form. He just wants to show that he is up to the situation. This weekend was unlucky for him, my hope is that he will return to the top and we will see a very strong Carlos who knows how to push Charles to the limit from the next race.” – the Ferrari boss said at the end of the 2022 Australian Grand Prix.
The Ferrari team principal then sent a spicy comment to Red Bull: “Ross Brawn has always taught me that in order to win you must first reach the finish line. This is a fundamental aspect which is needed to secure the best result and our approach goes precisely in this direction. Reliability must always be there: there is a constant search to improve it and it is never guaranteed. We celebrate here in Melbourne, but it doesn’t necessarily mean it will always be like this for the whole season. Now, however, we are enjoying it” – Mattia Binotto concluded.
