Scuderia Ferrari Monegasque driver Charles Leclerc is of the opinion that the absence of a slipstream during his last qualifying lap prevented him from securing a spot on the front row for the Italian Grand Prix at the Monza circuit earlier today.
In an exciting qualifying session, Charles Leclerc’s Ferrari teammate, Carlos Sainz, narrowly outpaced championship leader Max Verstappen by a mere 0.013 seconds, sending the passionate Tifosi at Monza into a frenzy. However, Charles Leclerc missed the opportunity to join Carlos Sainz at the front of the grid.
During the final qualifying attempts, Charles Leclerc found himself leading the pack of cars, inadvertently creating a slipstream effect that benefited Max Verstappen, with Carlos Sainz closely trailing behind the Red Bull. Charles Leclerc believes that this situation ultimately hindered his chances of contending for pole position.
“On my side, I am a bit disappointed – I obviously wanted to be first” – the Ferrari man explained at the end of the qualifying session for the Italian Grand Prix in front of the Tifosi – “But seeing that Carlos is P1 is great for Ferrari, he has done an incredible job all weekend and I have been struggling quite a bit more through FP1, FP2 and FP3. In qualifying, I managed to put everything together so I was really happy, then unfortunately in Q3 I didn’t have a slipstream that probably cost us one position at least. But that’s life. We should be happy, especially on my side. I’ve been struggling a lot and I don’t smile very often when I am P3 but being here and having this much support is an amazing feeling.” – the Monegasque pointed out.
When asked about Ferrari’s chances of challenging Red Bull and Max Verstappen for the race win at Monza, Charles Leclerc added: “We will try to do first and second with Carlos.”
