Two years behind
Scuderia Ferrari, Mercedes, and Red Bull entered the 2022 Formula 1 season with three different car designs, in a championship marked by the return of ground-effect aerodynamics. In 2022, the RB18 car won 17 out of 22 races. However, due to regulations preventing on-track testing and budget cap limitations, both Ferrari and Mercedes stuck with their respective conceptual choices for their 2023 Formula 1 cars. Both have failed to pose a significant threat to Red Bull, which is even more dominant in 2023.
Additionally, McLaren, following in the footsteps of Red Bull, has shown noticeable growth, making them the second-strongest team on challenging circuits like Silverstone and Suzuka. Given the facts, it is reasonable to expect that Ferrari and Mercedes will resemble the Red Bull RB19 in 2024. Ferrari Team Principal Frederic Vasseur highlighted that the 2024 F1 car has already been substantially decided and will feature a new chassis and rear end.
Carlos Sainz, during an event organized by sponsor Estrella Galicia, reiterated that the forthcoming Ferrari is making progress in the wind tunnel. The Spanish driver also pointed out that aligning with Red Bull means accepting that they are starting this project with a two-year disadvantage compared to the Milton Keynes-based team: “Red Bull is two years ahead and has a half-second advantage. It won’t be easy to reach their level, and that’s why they are dominating. We have no choice but to focus on ourselves. Time will tell if and when we can catch up to Red Bull. I am optimistic. If McLaren managed to make such a significant step, I’m sure a team like Ferrari can do it too. We know what we need to work on and what we need to improve.” – the Ferrari driver concluded, ahead of the Qatar Grand Prix.
