Formula 1 hopeful Callum Ilott has revealed the scariest circuit he’s raced ahead of his maiden IndyCar campaign.
The 23-year-old – an F1 reserve driver for Alfa Romeo in 2021 – is taking a gap year from the Ferrari Driver Academy to take up his first full-time seat with Juncos Hollinger Racing.
The move will see him race across 17 venues in America and Canada but will any fill him with the same dread as a track he describes as being twice as scary as Monaco?
“The most intimidating circuit I’ve had was last year in GT at Spa,” said Ilott.
“Just because all the high speed corners were not flat out, they were really on the limit meaning that if you overpushed slightly you were in the wall. It was a 24-hour race and unfortunately we didn’t even get past the 30-minute mark so we didn’t get to experience it.
“That was tough because it’s a tough track, there’s not much room for error, and in those cars as well, it (a crash) can be a very big one.
“In terms of a track on its own I think, irrelevant of whatever car you’re in, it would be Macau. That track is just like Monaco, times two. It’s just windy, doesn’t stop, all looks the same, gets tighter and tighter as you go through the lap and I think it took me like five, six days on the simulator to get the rhythm when I first got there.”
The Cambridge-born talent provided the insight while answering a series of questions from the public. From toilet talk to celebrity chat, the 17-minute video produced by sponsors Adrian Flux, shows Ilott’s lighter side while also offering another tantalising insight into the world of motorsport.
The 2020 Formula 2 runner-up took on the final three rounds of the 2021 IndyCar season with Juncos. He completed just one race.
