Scuderia Ferrari has dismissed the Formula 1 rumors recently circulating in the Italian press suggesting that Thai and British racing driver Alexander Albon could be in line to replace Carlos Sainz in Maranello for the 2025 Formula One championship.
Alex Albon has been making a positive impact since joining Williams, contributing to their improved performance and potential for scoring points this season. He has expressed his commitment to the team’s future. However, with Carlos Sainz’s current deal set to expire at the end of the next Formula 1 campaign, speculation has arisen regarding the possibility of him being replaced and potentially joining Sauber ahead of their anticipated switch to Audi in 2026.
This scenario could open up an opportunity for the Thai and British racing driver, who has a history with Scuderia team principal Frederic Vasseur from their GP3 collaboration, and potentially partnering with the current driver Charles Leclerc.
When questioned about these rumors, the Frenchman responded: “I don’t know where this story came from. I’ve run Albon in the past, and we’re friends. If a reporter asks me if Alex is currently doing a good job, I would say yes. But that doesn’t mean I’m interested in taking him. I think Alex also has a contract with Williams for 2024. The team is investing a lot, so there is no problem.” – he explained.

Carlos Sainz has publicly somewhat criticized the Maranello team for undermining his race strategy and showing preference towards his teammate Charles Leclerc, particularly evident in the Austrian GP where he believed it resulted in a missed opportunity for a double podium finish. Although the Spaniard currently holds a higher position in the Drivers standings compared to his Maranello team, with 83 points versus 74 ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix, Fred Vasseur acknowledged that the Spanish driver finds it challenging to match Charles Leclerc’s performance during crucial moments:
“Carlos is very consistent. He is able to manage his own pace and does it a little better than Charles. He doesn’t overdrive, but he doesn’t have the big peaks of Charles, when, for example, he takes pole positions. Sometimes [Carlos] is very close to [Charles]. In Miami, up to the last corner, he was on pole. He limits the bad mistakes and he’s always there.” – Scuderia Ferrari team principal Frederic Vasseur pointed out.
