Scuderia Ferrari have left the door open to Mick Schumacher, the son of Formula One legend Michael, one day following in his father’s footsteps. Michael Schumacher is widely regarded as the sport’s best ever racing driver that saw him win a record seven world championships before retiring in 2012. The German won five of those with Ferrari and notched up 72 Grands Prix wins for the Italian team during his illustrious career.
But could his son add to the Schumacher total in the near future? Mick Schumacher is currently making a name for himself in Formula 3 and his performances are said to be catching the eye of several Formula 1 team bosses. Schumacher won all three races at the recent Nurburgring to trail Red Bull junior Dan Ticktum in the drivers’ standings by just three points with just two races to go.
Should the 19-year-old go on to win the title he would boost his chances of making it to F1 with Esteban Ocon, Lance Stroll and Lando Norris all following the same path. But the real aim for Mick will be to race for the Prancing Horse and current team principal Maurizio Arrivabene’s latest comments will give him hope of achieving that: “The recent results were very, very good and I wish to him a great career,” said Maurizio Arrivabene – “But let the guy have fun. I always repeat this: [young drivers should be] focused, concentrated, but at the same time have fun and grow up slowly but certainly. Then we will see about the future. How can you say no, in Maranello, to a name like this?”
Former German Formula 1 driver Timo Glock recently backed the idea of Schumacher being given an opportunity to race in F1, claiming it would boost the interest of F1 fans in their homeland: “I’ve talked to him a couple of times and I think for him, his best options now are GP3 or Formula 2. Either way, he would be closer to formula one,” Glock said – “If F1 had a Schumacher again, it would boost the interest in Germany. Right now the ratings are good with an average of 4 million viewers. But at the height of Michael Schumacher, it was more like 10 million. The current drop is normal and we saw it when Boris Becker and Steffi Graf finished their careers.
Lewis Hamilton currently leads the F1 drivers’ standings ahead of Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel by 40 points following his victory in Singapore last weekend. Mercedes also lead Ferrari in the constructors’ table with the Italian team 37 points behind the leaders.
