During the second part of the 2021 Formula One season, there were a lot of discussions about the work carried out in Maranello in order to for Ferrari to be able to count on a top level power unit for the current world championship. A job that was very important, more than one could believe. The Italian side is sure to be the engine manufacturer who has recovered the most power despite the introduction of E10 fuels.
“We have completely redesigned our power unit compared to last year, especially the combustion engine. And we can count on new fuel. Last year we also introduced new developments in the hybrid sector, which we have maintained this season” – explained Team Principal Mattia Binotto.
If the power was found rather easily, it was more difficult to work on reliability. From this point of view, the work carried out during the last winter months on the thermal base to improve its durability is very important, and looking back this explains the slight delay in starting the F1-75 power unit for the first time.
“During the winter we focused on the search for performance and reliability because what we have at the beginning of the season is frozen for the rest of the championship and for the following years”, rightly explained to the press a very diplomat Mattia Binotto back in December. However, as formu1a.uno had anticipated a few weeks ago, Ferrari could count on a plan B, which it took advantage of thanks to the approval of the Federation: the FIA allowed Ferrari to solve some reliability problems that have already emerged and which were already well known during the winter.

Precisely for this reason, since before the start of the season, the Italian team had taken the decision to count on the use of four engines during the 2022 Formula 1 season, and not three as per regulation, thus accepting to take penalties in the second half of the campaign. If the replacement of the engine on Carlos Sainz’s F1-75 was obligatorily anticipated due to a problem with the oil tank of his internal combustion engine, promptly repaired so as to make the first unit usable on Friday practice during race weekends, the engine change on the Charles Leclerc’s car between Miami and Spain was as per initial planning, Piergiuseppe Donadoni and Giuliano Duchessa confirmed for formu1a.uno.
