Lewis Hamilton has acknowledged that Ferrari’s crucial meeting with Charles Leclerc and team principal Fred Vasseur in Brazil will not resolve all the tensions created by their controversial clash at the 2026 Mexico City Grand Prix. However, the seven-time Formula 1 world champion believes the discussions at Interlagos are essential to building a stronger team for 2027, admitting that he is almost glad the events in Mexico have forced everyone to address the situation.
The meeting between Lewis Hamilton, Charles Leclerc and Fred Vasseur is scheduled to take place at Interlagos during the São Paulo Grand Prix weekend. Following the events in Mexico, the Ferrari team principal had already made clear that he intended to speak directly with both drivers about their conduct and the consequences of their on-track battle.
Ferrari meeting in Brazil to address Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc clash
Speaking immediately after the Mexican Grand Prix, Fred Vasseur confirmed that a discussion with his drivers was inevitable. “We will certainly discuss it, whether between four or six eyes,” the French manager said, referring to the possibility of individual conversations or a meeting involving all three.
The controversial battle between Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc in Mexico has raised serious questions about how Ferrari manages competition between its two drivers.
Rather than prioritising the team’s overall result, both drivers appeared focused on their individual interests during the race. Their approach ultimately benefited Max Verstappen, who took victory while Ferrari missed an opportunity to win with the SF-26, a car that had demonstrated strong technical potential since Friday’s free practice sessions.
After the race, Charles Leclerc quickly returned to Monaco for the birth of his first daughter, Bianca, while Fred Vasseur travelled back to Maranello with the team. Their reunion in Brazil now provides an opportunity for the three central figures to discuss what happened and how similar situations should be handled in the future.
The meeting also comes amid reports of discussions about new internal Ferrari racing rules following the Mexico City controversy.
Ferrari management reportedly unhappy with Lewis Hamilton’s public approach
Beyond the on-track confrontation, questions have also emerged about how Lewis Hamilton’s public comments have been received within Ferrari.
Italian journalist Leo Turrini, writing for QN, has suggested that senior figures at Maranello were unhappy with the British driver’s attitude following the Mexican Grand Prix.
“The Briton is not wrong, but at Maranello they are beginning to realise that Hamilton is a company within the company, practically unmanageable when he decides to speak out…” the Italian newspaper reported.
The assessment reflects the wider discussion surrounding Lewis Hamilton’s determination to express his opinions openly, even when his comments attract attention or contribute to tensions within the team.
Lewis Hamilton explains relationship with Charles Leclerc and demands for change
For his part, Lewis Hamilton has provided a detailed explanation of his position ahead of the meeting. The seven-time world champion emphasised that he has invested considerable effort in building a positive relationship with Charles Leclerc, while acknowledging that his arrival at Ferrari and his determination to introduce changes have not necessarily made the process straightforward.
Speaking in comments reported by The Race, Lewis Hamilton explained:
“I’ve worked really hard to build a good relationship with Leclerc. I know Leclerc is well established within the team, given that he’s been at Ferrari for eight years. I’ve always tried to be respectful. Naturally, it’s not so easy when someone like me comes into a team. I’m very outspoken and I push for a lot of changes. And I’ll continue to push for more. And as long as I’m here, that’s how it will be. I’m here to win. To be able to win, you have to work with everyone around you.”
His comments underline the challenge of integrating his own ambitions and working methods into a team where Charles Leclerc has already established a long-standing position.
At the same time, Lewis Hamilton made clear that his determination to push for improvements is not something he intends to abandon. In his view, achieving success requires cooperation with everyone around him, even when difficult conversations are necessary.
Lewis Hamilton admits Ferrari meeting will not resolve everything
Although the Interlagos discussions are expected to address the fallout from Mexico, Lewis Hamilton has cautioned against expecting an immediate solution to every issue between the drivers and the team.
The British driver explained that he has not tried to predict how the meeting will unfold, but remains committed to approaching it honestly and accepting responsibility for his role within Ferrari.
“I haven’t really tried to imagine what the meeting will be like, how it will turn out,” Lewis Hamilton added. “You never know. What I’ll do is make sure I’m always myself, without pretending, and I won’t shy away from taking responsibility for whatever role I have and whatever decisions I make for the team, and I’ll simply keep moving forward.”
He continued by acknowledging that repairing the situation will require more than a single conversation, particularly with Ferrari already looking towards the next Formula 1 season.
“I don’t think everything will be smoothed over and resolved in one meeting, but it’s important. What we build now will put us in the right position for next year. And, in a way, I’m glad we went through that experience in Mexico. Obviously, I would have preferred to win and secure a one-two finish. But we can learn from it.”
Those remarks reveal why Lewis Hamilton considers the controversy an opportunity to improve Ferrari’s internal working relationship rather than simply an incident to be forgotten.
While the British driver would have preferred to leave Mexico with a victory and a Ferrari one-two, he believes the discussions prompted by the confrontation could help establish a better foundation for 2027.
The meeting at Interlagos therefore represents an important moment for Fred Vasseur, Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc. Whether it produces immediate agreements or becomes the beginning of a longer process, the priority will be finding a way to balance the drivers’ individual ambitions with Ferrari’s collective objective of winning.
