Lewis Hamilton continues to face growing difficulties with Scuderia Ferrari in the current Formula 1 season, and doubts about his form are multiplying. An ex-driver has now warned that the British champion’s strength has faded, and that his future with the Maranello-based team is more uncertain than ever.
The seven-time Formula 1 World Champion is experiencing a challenging year at the wheel of the Ferrari SF-25. His struggles in adapting to the car have raised questions about whether he can replicate the incredible success achieved during his long spell with Mercedes. Both fans and experts are divided, with some questioning if Lewis Hamilton can still perform at the highest level that once defined his career.
“I have seen Hamilton lose the smile in his eyes”
The debate was reignited by former Ferrari driver Ivan Capelli, who delivered sharp criticism of Hamilton’s current state. Speaking to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Capelli stated: “I have seen Hamilton lose the smile that he once had in his eyes. That was his real strength: taking the team by the hand in the most difficult moments. Now he is no longer able to do that, especially with such a quick teammate alongside him.”
Ivan Capelli continued by highlighting the contrast in Hamilton’s life inside and outside the cockpit: “Hamilton lives a sort of double life. Off the track, he is still the great champion we all know, but once in the car he struggles to find an answer to his driving problems.”
These words have sparked intense discussion, particularly as they arrived just after a difficult Hungarian Grand Prix weekend. There, Lewis Hamilton himself described his performance as “useless” and even suggested that Ferrari should have replaced him following Charles Leclerc’s pole position in qualifying. Such statements have further fueled speculation about the British star’s state of mind and his role within the team.
Ivan Capelli still sees hope for Lewis Hamilton
Despite his harsh criticism, Ivan Capelli does not believe that Hamilton’s story with Ferrari is already over. He remarked: “Lewis can still bring something important to Ferrari. To imagine that he could end the year in this way is inconceivable. His real wildcard is 2026, when everyone will start again from scratch with brand new technical regulations and new cars.”
According to Ivan Capelli, Lewis Hamilton may still have a chance to revive his fortunes once Formula 1 enters its next major regulatory cycle. Until then, however, the challenge is clear: the British champion must prove that he can rediscover his true self during the second half of the season, withstand the pressure of Ferrari’s demanding environment, and rise to the constant challenge presented by Charles Leclerc.
A future hanging in the balance
The situation leaves Lewis Hamilton’s future hanging between uncertainty and hope. The second part of the 2025 season will be crucial to determine whether his time at Ferrari turns into a remarkable story of rebirth, or whether it evolves into a slow and painful farewell to Formula 1 glory. The spotlight will remain firmly on Hamilton as the battle within Ferrari, and with the rest of the grid, continues.
