The chance that Mick Schumacher will soon be on display in a Formula 1 car is growing by the day, as Scuderia Ferrari Team Principal Mattia Binotto confirmed yesterday in Italy that Michael Schumacher’s son is doing tremendously well and that he will be getting ready for his FP1 debut. Ferrari’s team boss continues to comment on the news that Sebastian Vettel has signed for Racing Point.
“We will give Mick Schumacher some opportunities to drive in FP1. But we will not announce it yet,” says Binotto in a somewhat mysterious conversation with the German branch of RTL. The logical next question then is why Ferrari is waiting? “We still need to arrange things.”
Mick Schumacher is currently sitting in second place in the Formula 2 championship and there is still a very good chance of the title. “I am very happy that Mick is doing well in F2. His main focus has to be in F2, he is battling for the championship. There he needs to be concentrated. Mick got a great opportunity or possibility next year to eventually drive in F1. We need to prepare that one,” – the Ferrari boss explained.
At the same time, Mick Schumacher will drive his father Michael’s 2004 World Championship-winning car as part of Ferrari’s festivities at the Tuscan Grand Prix. Race nine of the 2020 World Championship at Mugello is Ferrari’s 1,000th F1 World Championship event, which they are also celebrating with their cars, driven by Charles Leclerc and Sebastian Vettel, being decked out in a retro burgundy livery.
Before Sunday’s race, 21-year-old Schumacher, a Ferrari Academy driver, will take part in a demonstration run around the track in the F2004, in which his father won his record seventh and final World Championship title.
Ferrari described it as “a fitting tribute to the Scuderia’s most successful car and its incomparable driver”.
It will not be the first time Mick will have driven the car as he also took it for a spin at Hockenheim last year before the German Grand Prix.
