Always divided between present and future, Formula 1 continues into the 2022 season – increasingly characterized by the challenge between Red Bull and Ferrari, with Mercedes in the role of third wheel – without forgetting how the championship will evolve in the coming years. The eyes of fans and professionals, in particular, are focused on the 2026 championship. In fact, that will be the year the new power units will come into force, which should be more sustainable both from an economic and an environmental point of view. Teams are now discussing for years how the new generation of power units should look like.
The appeal of F1 is such that two of the world’s largest car brands, Audi and Porsche, have now almost 100% guaranteed they will enter the category. The two brands of the Volkswagen group should ‘team up’ with Sauber (Audi) and Red Bull (Porsche) respectively, thus keeping the number of teams on the starting grid at 10.
Convincing the two giants from Ingolstadt and Stuttgart to enter the sport, however, was not easy, as confirmed by Ferrari team principal Mattia Binotto and Mercedes boss Toto Wolff at a press conference ahead of the Austrian Grand Prix at the Red Bull Ring earlier today:
“We are happy that Porsche and Audi want to enter Formula 1. We have done everything possible to please them” – said the number one of the Ferrari pit wall – ” like for example removing the MGU-H. This is a compromise because the ‘H’ part improved efficiency so much. The regulations? They are not yet public because it takes time.” – the Ferrari boss explained.

Mattia Binotto’s view was also echoed by the Mercedes team principal, who is ready for the ‘derby’ with two other important German brands: “As Mattia said, we have made great strides towards Porsche and Audi, such as removing the H. We are discussing the last details of the regulations – concluded the Austrian manager – despite the fact that Porsche and Audi have not yet made an official commitment to Formula 1.” – Toto Wolff added.
