The first stint of Charles Leclerc with medium tires in the 2021 British Grand Prix was really very convincing and Scuderia Ferrari Team Principal Mattia Binotto therefore underlined how important it is to be able to start from the front and then try to impose your own pace in free air:
“But I don’t think we were on the same pace with Mercedes” – the Ferrari boss added – “because looking at the GPS data, Hamilton was managing the tires, probably being worried about blistering on that type of compound. It is true, however, that we had a better pace than Bottas. After Norris in Austria, we once again see that being in front and being able to race in free air is an advantage, so it’s essential to have a good grid position.” – Mattia Binotto explained.
Before the summer break there is only one more race, the Hungarian Grand Prix, on a Hungaroring track that on paper seems more favourable for the SF21 car, even if Ferrari for the moment seems to prefer not to make any predictions:
“Budapest is a track that can better adapt to our car. It will be very hot once again, so tire wear on the front will be an issue. We will have to be careful, but these last few races are a good indication of our progress. We don’t even have to think about arriving in Hungary and being faster than Red Bull or Mercedes, we will go there to do our best, to fight, because we have seen that every race can hold surprises.” – the Ferrari boss said at the end of the British Grand Prix.
The goal of trying to finish third in the Constructors’ Championship is more possible than ever after today’s test, although Mattia Binotto explained that it is more important to continue improving ahead of next season: “I said even before the season, this year Ferrari can fight for third place, because we have always done so in previous years, with the exception of 2020. There is no doubt that we want to finish third, but the primary objective is to improve as a team in every aspect. We are doing it and it can be seen by our race pace. If we get third position, it would be the result of our hard work during this time.” – Mattia Binotto concluded.
