Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz shared four seasons as teammates at Scuderia Ferrari. The Spaniard joined the Italian team in 2021 as the successor to Sebastian Vettel, while the Monegasque had been promoted from Sauber two years earlier, in 2019.
Charles Leclerc’s immediate pace and performance had indirectly pushed Vettel out of the team, as the four-time world champion struggled to match the Monegasque’s speed and consistency. Carlos Sainz arrived at Ferrari after impressive displays with McLaren, where he had finished sixth in the drivers’ championship in consecutive seasons. His solid and consistent results made him the top candidate to replace Vettel at Maranello.
Throughout their partnership, Leclerc and Sainz proved to be closely matched competitors. Leclerc accumulated a total of 1,029 championship points while racing alongside Sainz, who also scored just over 900 points during the same period. By the conclusion of the 2024 season, the pair had become the longest-serving driver duo on the Formula 1 grid. However, Ferrari chose not to renew Sainz’s contract, instead opting to sign seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton for the 2025 season.
In a recent interview with the official Ferrari magazine, Charles Leclerc reflected on the teammates he has had during his time at Maranello. He acknowledged the valuable lessons learned from Sebastian Vettel, particularly regarding the significance of paying close attention to even the smallest technical details. Although Leclerc never raced directly against Vettel in his prime form, he recognized the importance of the German driver’s meticulous work ethic and how it positively influenced his own approach.
Leclerc also commented on his collaboration with Lewis Hamilton, describing the seven-time champion as a ‘unique talent’ and a legendary figure in the sport. However, when discussing Carlos Sainz, Leclerc openly admitted his admiration for Sainz’s remarkable adaptability. He revealed that he has ‘always envied’ how quickly Sainz can adjust to a wide range of conditions on the track.
This adaptability has been crucial for Carlos Sainz, who has raced for five different Formula 1 teams over the past decade—Toro Rosso, Renault, McLaren, Ferrari, and now Williams. Leclerc pointed out that Sainz’s ability to perform well regardless of changing circumstances has been a key strength throughout his career.
Leclerc praised his former teammates, highlighting the unique qualities each brought to Ferrari. He described Vettel as a hard worker whose attention to detail was exemplary. He expressed admiration for Sainz’s quick adaptability to varying conditions and praised Lewis Hamilton’s exceptional talent and legendary status.
Despite Leclerc’s strong performances, some questions remain about whether he has any weaknesses to address at Ferrari. After a disappointing Hungarian Grand Prix where Leclerc dropped from the lead to finish fourth during the final stint, Ferrari’s sporting director moved swiftly to calm the driver’s frustration. By the time Leclerc spoke to the media, his tone was noticeably more measured.
This pattern of public criticism followed by retraction has led some observers to suggest that Ferrari might be exerting influence over Leclerc’s public statements, with accusations that the team is effectively ‘brainwashing’ him. While Charles Leclerc has shown he has the talent and determination to challenge for a world championship, Ferrari has only delivered a truly competitive car once since 2019, in the 2022 season.
Some commentators have speculated that Charles Leclerc might consider moving to another team to achieve his championship ambitions. However, the Monegasque’s strong emotional attachment to Ferrari appears to be the main barrier preventing such a move. His commitment to the iconic Italian team remains ‘extreme,’ making it unlikely that he will seek opportunities elsewhere anytime soon.
