After many years during which Scuderia Ferrari put its hopes in experienced drivers such as Fernando Alonso, Kimi Raikkonen or Sebastian Vettel, for the 2021 Formula One championship the Maranello team decided to bet on a young driver duo: Charles Leclerc (23) and Carlos Sainz (26). According to the Chief Executive Officer of Ferrari, John Elkann, this situation is not a problem as the young duo have brought ‘new energy’ to the Italian side.
Youngest line-up in years
After a very poor 2020 Formula 1 season, Scuderia Ferrari parted ways with four-time F1 world champion Sebastian Vettel and decided to focus on a long term project with Charles Leclerc. Sebastian Vettel was replaced by Carlos Sainz, as the Spanish driver impressed during his two years alongside McLaren. And after the first half of the current season, John Elkann is very happy with his new driver pairing.
“Ferrari is more focused than ever on the importance of its sporting dimension in motorsport,” he said, as reported by the Italian sport newspaper published in Turin, TuttoSport. “In Formula 1, our young and exciting driver duo has brought new energy to the whole team.” – he added.
While the Maranello team ended the 2020 season only sixth among Constructors in 2020, Ferrari has improved this year and was able to challenge McLaren for third place in the standings: at the moment both teams are on 163 points at the halfway point of the championship.
