The final day of pre-season testing at the Circuit de Catalunya in Bacelona started this morning and has ended with the Mercedes of George Russell at the top of the standings, with Max Verstappen second for Red Bull. Mercedes and Red Bull were also the highest lap counts for this morning, after Charles Leclerc topped the timesheets ahead of Daniel Ricciardo yesterday.
Scuderia Ferrari Monegasque driver Charles Leclerc took to the track in this first part of the day, while teammate Carlos Sainz will conclude the Maranello team’s scheduled programme this afternoon. Charles finished the session in fourth place, with a personal best lap time of 1m19.831, set with the Pirelli C3 tyres.
We have not seen many tech upgrades from the teams this week, but today Ferrari did run a new floor.
Some teams have suffered some reliability issues, but in general the test has proven that the teams have their cars quite reliable out of the box. With just a few minutes remaining, the session was not be resumed following the fifth red flag of this morning, with Sebastian Vettel (Aston Martin) stopping in sector three.
A poor last day of testing in Barcelona for Alpine, who have confirmed that they will not be running for the remainder of the day following Fernando Alonso’s issue this morning. This was a hydraulics problem, the team have said in a statement, and repairs will continue on the car, putting them out for the rest of the day.
This afternoon’s session will begin with the Spanish circuit being sprayed with water in order to replicate wet conditions. This is to allow Formula 1 official tyre supplier Pirelli to get some feedback on their new 18-inch wet and intermediate tyres ahead of the new championship.
