For the second time in a week, the Scuderia extended the work program last night to restore Carlos’s heavily damaged SF-23 from yesterday afternoon. The chassis and power unit did not suffer damage, but the car required an extensive intervention. Organizers decided to smooth out the bump in turn 3 that troubled several drivers. Mercedes and Aston Martin also broke the curfew: as it is the second instance for both this season, no penalties are expected.
Late last night, Scuderia Ferrari’s personnel was forced to extend the work program to restore Carlos Sainz’s car, which was involved in a violent accident at turn 3 of Yas Marina just eight minutes into the FP2 session. For the second time in the 2023 season, the Scuderia broke the curfew imposed on personnel operating in the paddock, remaining within the exceptions allowed by the regulations.
The team received Carlos Sainz’s car after the checkered flag of the FP2 session and immediately began assessing its condition. The major concern, namely that the chassis would be damaged, was dispelled, and no damage to the power unit was recorded. However, the technicians were faced with a significant workload, called to another tour-de-force after the one a week ago in Las Vegas, also for an incident (caused by a manhole) during free practice.
The personnel managing the Yas Marina circuit also analyzed Carlos Sainz’s incident, deciding late at night to smooth out the bump in turn 3, which was reported by many drivers in both the first and second free practice sessions.

As in Carlos’s case, the choice of setup becomes crucial for managing the car in that section, and indeed, the drivers with a minimal car height complained the most, a characteristic highlighted in other parts of the circuit as well.
Last night, Mercedes and Aston Martin also broke the curfew, and in both cases (like Ferrari), it is the second instance in 2023, so no penalties are expected.
