Scuderia Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur has emphasized that securing the second position in the 2023 Formula 1 constructor standings cannot even be deemed as a “success” for the Italian side, urging the Maranello team to continue their development efforts in the battle against Red Bull, who is clearly dominating the current championship.
The Maranello team has faced a challenging start to the 2023 Formula 1 campaign, struggling to match the pace of Aston Martin and Mercedes while grappling with various problems plaguing the SF-23.
In recent races, the Italian side showed signs of progress, showcasing impressive performance in both the Canadian and Austrian Grand Prix, before suffering another setback last weekend in the British Grand Prix, as Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz could only take a P9 and P10 finish at the Silverstone circuit. This means that Ferrari has lost further ground in the battle against Mercedes and Aston Martin. The Italian side currently holds the fourth spot in the constructor standings, trailing Mercedes by 46 points in second place and Aston Martin by 24 points in third ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix.
Speaking in an interview with Sky Sport Italia during of the British Grand Prix, Frederic Vasseur addressed the Maranello team’s position, explaining:
“When we put the car on track in Bahrain, we were all disappointed with the results and pace. However, the spirit was very positive; we developed the car without telling ‘lies’, and in part, it was done, but it was not enough. The goal is not to come second. Second place it’s not a success for us, but at least the direction is the right one. So far, we have suffered a lot, especially on the race pace.” – the French manager pointed out.
Frederic Vasseur then confirmed Ferrari has to continue its development push and deliver further upgrades for the SF-23 in order to be able to recover the gap to Mercedes and Aston Martin in the battle for P2 behind a Red Bull team that is easily heading towards another easy title: “We made a step forward in Montreal and Spielberg, but more is needed. So we need to take another step forward.” – the Ferrari team principal concluded.
