Scuderia Ferrari Team Principal Mattia Binotto has hit back at Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes.
Hamilton constantly complains that his Ferrari rivals have a quick car on the long straights.
The Brit thinks his opponents should be performing at a higher level than they currently are, especially after Mercedes have romped to three one-two finishes this campaign. But Mattia Binotto does not believe his side have the advantage that everybody seems to think they do.
“If you look at the speed of Mercedes I think they were very strong as well,” Binotto said. “So maybe you should ask them how they are so good. “I don’t think there is much on the straights [between] us and the others.”
Ferrari are hoping to kick-start their season at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix next weekend. Sebastian Vettel and Charles Leclerc have only secured one podium place each this season.
But Mattia Binotto is not sure if the circuit will suit his drivers. “Baku is a circuit where you’ve got a different aero configuration certainly so I think it’s not only power units [that make the difference],” he added.
“It could be aero configuration. It’s not only the straights in Baku, it’s a lot of corners. It’s a circuit that’s very difficult in that respect so let’s see. I think the competition is very tough. There are races where you may be in front by a few hundredths.”
Hamilton leads the Drivers’ Championship, sitting six points ahead of team-mate Valtteri Bottas.
Red Bull’s Max Verstappen competes the top three, two point ahead of Sebastian Vettel and three above Charles Leclerc.
