The controversy surrounding McLaren’s ‘flexi-wings’ has sparked widespread discussion in the paddock. Despite the FIA ruling them legal, the topic remains a hotbed of opinions. On Friday, Ferrari team principal Frederic Vasseur became the latest figure to weigh in on the matter.
Earlier this week, the FIA issued a statement confirming it had conducted an investigation into the reports surrounding McLaren’s wings and deemed them compliant with regulations. During Friday’s press conference, when questioned about the FIA’s ruling, Ferrari team principal Frederic Vasseur responded by saying: “I think there is a kind of confusion between what’s happened with the front wing and the rear wing. The front wing, we all agree, it could be a grey area because in the Techincal Directive, the first paragraph of the Techincal Directive, is saying that you can’t design part of the car with the intention of the deformation. Intention is difficult to manage.”
What’s the story with McLaren’s rear wing?
Last weekend at the Baku City circuit, TV footage captured a segment of the wing flexing upwards on the straights. Despite this, McLaren had successfully passed all FIA tests once again. However, Frederic Vasseur remains skeptical of the design, expressing lingering doubts: “The rear wing story is completely different because on the article, you also have a maximum deflection, and this is black or white. It’s not no grey, no dark grey, no light grey. It’s black and black. And for me, it’s clear.” – the French manager pointed out.
