Scuderia Ferrari team principal Mattia Binotto shared his thoughts on the outcome of the 2022 Formula 1 Canadian Grand Prix in an interview for Sky Sport F1, after Red Bull’s Max Verstappen won the race at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve ahead of Carlos Sainz, while Charles Leclerc moved up to fifth from 19th position.
Retirement of Sergio Perez and the reliability issue
“This season you have to attack in every race, even if perhaps this was a weekend in which we were more in defense. We started from the bottom with Charles and had to minimize the disadvantage in terms of points. In reality, we gained something in the Constructors’ championship, in a weekend in which we thought we were going to suffer given the circumstances. We gained something, even if just a little, so that’s fine. Reliability is a problem for everyone. It is never taken for granted and it is difficult to manage it. This time it happened to Sergio Perez, other times to us. We have to stay focused on ourselves. We know that there are problems and they must be solved as soon as possible. Now having two fresh power units will give Charles some breathing space. Over the coming weekends we will focus only on the aspects regarding performance.
Charles Leclerc’s comeback and Carlos Sainz’s missing details to get the win in Canada
“From the bottom you always want to overtake as much as possible but you don’t always succeed. Even at the pitwall we were patient not to react at times to Charles’ comments, which were normal at that moment of the race, to maximize the result. He finished fifth starting from the back, I think it’s a good result. Carlos Sainz? He is gaining confidence. He knows the car better and drives better than at the beginning of the season. His race pace was already good on Friday. We knew that if he had passed Fernando immediately he could have fought and he did. Too bad because today we were a little faster. 1-2 tenths are not enough to overtake, but he paid for yesterday’s qualifying. Once again, perfect weekends are needed to win. Carlos paid for yesterday’s qualifying more than today’s driving in the race. He was good. He had a solid race pace, he immediately tried to pass on the restart and then waited intelligently for the last 2-3 laps. There was an opportunity but he made a mistake at the hairpin. But he was very close. It wasn’t his turn today, but the opportunity for victory will soon come.”
Silverstone and the expectation of a big update from Red Bull
“If we go to Silverstone to win? We go to every race to win. Then Charles has new engines so the next four races before the break will be important. I expect Red Bull to bring a big development update to Silverstone. We will have to understand what they will bring compared to what we will do. Then we will judge on the track. What will our updates be? I did not say anything about updates”.
Pit stops to improve
“It takes perfect weekends to win races. They weren’t yesterday in qualifying and they weren’t today with the pit stop. We will have to look at this because there is now something systematically on that front that is not perfect.”
