Sebastian Vettel will start his sixth and last season with Scuderia Ferrari, as the Maranello team and the German driver could not reach an agreement regarding a contract extension beyond 2020. After the official confirmation, which was made last month, the Italian side announced that Carlos Sainz will be driving for Ferrari in 2021 and 2022.
Many people believe that making this announcement so early in the year, as the 2020 Formula One season has not even started, might not be the best strategy for the Maranello team, given that Sebastian Vettel may choose not to respect certan team plans on track. But Scuderia Ferrari Team Principal Mattia Binotto explained the reason for the early announcement: “We decided this out of a sense of transparency towards Seb. He must have time to think about his future, we could not delay the decision. Our choice was fair to him and gives us credit/honor. If Seb went to Mercedes, I would be happy for him. He is a 4-time world champion and he deserves a top team.” – the Scuderia Ferrari boss said, as reported by the Italian media earlier today.
