Scuderia Ferrari Team Principal Mattia Binotto has leapt to the defence of Sebastian Vettel and Charles Leclerc, as the Maranello team did not manage to win any race in the 2019 Formula One season. Although Mercedes clearly has had the strongest car, it can also be said that Ferrari could have won the Canadian Grand Prix and could have also had a shot in Monaco and Azerbaijan without driver errors.
Sebastian Vettel, who turned 32 this week, is clearly under pressure at Maranello, amid rumours he could retire or return to Red Bull. Some say he is making too many mistakes, which could prompt Ferrari to promote Charles Leclerc and put a driver like Valtteri Bottas alongside the Monaco-born youngster. But Scuderia Ferrari team principal Mattia Binotto defended Sebastian Vettel and also Charles Leclerc:
“It was always racing situations where Sebastian was at the absolute limit, or sometimes just over it,” he said, as reported by Auto Bild earlier this week. Mattia Binotto also added that Ferrari, Charles Leclerc and Sebastian Vettel’s desire to finally challenge Mercedes means he they all have to push so hard, beyond the limits: It’s certainly not easy for him, no question. He has this dream of becoming world champion with Ferrari and we support him in making it happen. He has a lot of experience, expertise and ability, both as a team player and a leader with a great deal of enthusiasm at work” – Mattia Binotto added, also explaining the drivers’ mistakes: “All of them were racing situations in which Sebastian and Charles were at the absolute limit and sometimes above it. At the moment our drivers have to take risks in order to keep up [with Mercedes]” – he concluded.
