Scuderia Ferrari Team Principal Mattia Binotto has confirmed that the Maranello team will conduct a thorough analysis into what went wrong for them at the Hungaroring racetrack in Mogyorod, as Ferrari had high expectations for the Hungarian Grand Prix, but leaves Budapest without even one place on the podium.
Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc started the Hungarian Grand Prix from second place and third place respectively, with the Monegasque able to take the lead after passing his Maranello teammate in the pits and the Mercedes of George Russell on the track with a great overtaking move on the outside. However, Ferrari made a poor strategy call by mounting the Hard tyre on the F1-75 car of Charles Leclerc after his second pit-stop, which proved a bad tyre in the cold conditions on Sunday. When all was already lost, Ferrari made a third stop to switch to the Soft compound, putting the Monegasque down to sixth place.
Carlos Sainz could not defend against Lewis Hamilton in the final stages of the race and eventually finished outside the podium, in fourth place. Asked about what went wrong for Scuderia Ferrari, Mattia Binotto confirmed that it will take some time for the Italian side to fully understand how they lost such much ground in the second part of the Hungarian Grand Prix:
“What happened, it will take at least a few hours, a few days to analyse,” Mattia Binotto said for Sky Sports F1 – “Certainly we didn’t have today the performance we were expecting. Whatever tyres we were using, Soft, Medium or Hard, I think at the end the performance of our car was not as expected, and the car is not performing well. Maybe the weather conditions [played a role], it was a lot cooler today compared to the Friday. Today the car was not behaving well. I think that’s the point, that [for] the first time this season, [it’s] not working as we are hoping for. We [will] try to understand the reason.” – the Ferrari boss concluded.
